January Gigs / by Aaron Corr

 The Maccabees

The Maccabees

My first gig of 2016 was shot for the GoldenPlec review.  I'm a fan of the band but had yet to shoot them.  I'd heard recently that this tour would be dimly lit and potentially troublesome to photograph but it wasn't the worst I've seen.  Others I've spoke to since still grumble about it but I've some shots I'm happy with.  Obviously the deep blues and purples are annoying to edit in post processing but they were still salvageable.  Singer, Orlando Weeks, was frustrating to catch a good shot of due to the positioning of the microphone stand.  Shoot from the left of him and he's too obstructed, shoot from the right and he was still tough to catch a clear non-microphone eating shot, especially in that light.  For that reason I ended up focusing more on guitarists Hugo & Felix White as they were lively in action on stage.

 The Corrs

The Corrs

I had only one other gig in January which was on a far bigger scale, The Corrs.  We were give limited vantage point of either left or right side of the stage, and told not to go beyond a white line.  This was due to filming of the show but this seems to be the case for their whole tour.  It ended up with 5 of us squeezed into a small vantage point to shoot the main action on stage.  Sharon Corr, on violin, had a couple of microphones and keyboard obscuring her view most of the time.  The light on Caroline on drums was patchy at times when she was in a shootable pose, while Jim was that bit too far away that there wasn't much shots of him that could be taken without distraction.

There was no room for variety in the shots as a result, made more frustrating when I saw tweets from later songs in the gig where Andrea runs toward my side of the stage.  At least now I can say I got to photograph my famous cousins on stage*.

*May not actually be my cousins.
